The Ganges, its a labour of love ! I started dreaming about going down this river when i was nine years old.
After various long projects in countries other than India I decided the time was right for me to start this project. I had a big commission to produce a body of work to coincide with the 60th year of independence, sadly it fell through and I had to look elsewhere for support to finished the river.
The BBC stepped in and I managed to get the whole length of this mighty river, in fact it took nearly five years!
I still go back and visit and make pictures with families and regions that are undergoing massive change. For example Kolkata, the old buildings that are crumbling and not being maintained but pulled down. Kolkata was the Paris of the east in years gone by, with the East India company on the bank of the Ganges transporting good all over the world.
These images are a small selection but its top to bottom a 1,500 journey.
